Specialty clinical services – nutritional disorders

Critical Care Systems is dedicated to providing high-touch clinical care and customer service to both pediatric and adult patients with nutritional disorders.  Each community-based branch pharmacy has a multidisciplinary team to manage a patient’s nutritional support needs.

In addition to pharmacists, nurses, reimbursement specialists, and customer service representatives, Critical Care Systems offers specialized nutrition support dietitians who are available to closely monitor patients and consult with healthcare professionals.

What is total parenteral nutrition (TPN)?
Total parenteral nutrition is the intravenous infusion of nutrients.  TPN provides nutritional support to patients whose disease state precludes the use of their gastrointestinal tract.  Critical Care Systems provides home and alternate-site TPN to patients who would otherwise require hospitalization.

Critical Care Systems offers TPN for a number of nutritional disorders, including:

  • Bowel obstructions
  • Cancer and complications from cancer treatments
  • Complications resulting from bariatric or gastrointestinal surgery
  • Fistulas
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • Malabsorptive conditions
  • Pediatric anomalies (including Hirschsprung’s disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, gastroschisis)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Severe motility disorders
  • Short bowel syndrome

Patients requiring TPN may consume limited amounts of liquids or solids by mouth but not enough to sustain their nutritional status.  Patients usually infuse over 10-14 hours a day, but the schedule can be individualized depending on patient tolerance.  Patients typically need TPN for the short term, but they may occasionally need TPN for a longer period, and in rare cases, for life.
