The Critical Care Systems immune deficiency support program specializes in delivering safe, comprehensive immunoglobulin (IG) therapy for both children and adults. Our local team provides IG therapy with care and compassion in the comfort of your own home, or in our ambulatory infusion suite.
What are immune deficiencies?
Primary immune deficiencies are disorders in which part of the body’s immune system is missing or does not function properly, and is typically caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune system.
Secondary immune deficiencies are disorders in which the immune system is compromised by factors outside the immune system – such as viruses or chemotherapy.
Some immune deficiencies result from environmental factors or are secondary to other causes. Other immune deficiency diseases occur or are acquired as a result of having cancer, severe nutritional disorders, burns, infections, exposure to radiation, or organ transplantation.
Critical Care Systems manages a number of immune deficiencies, including the following:
- Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID)
- Selective IgA deficiency
- Severe combined immune deficiency
- X-linked agammaglobulinemia (Bruton’s disease)
- X-linked hyper-IgM deficiency
What is immunoglobulin (IG) therapy?
Immunoglobulin (IG) therapy, a concentrate of antibodies purified from blood plasma, helps prevent a wide variety of bacterial and viral infectious diseases, and other autoimmune diseases, and is used in the treatment and maintenance of patients unable to produce sufficient antibodies. IG is given intravenously via peripheral or central venous route and is administered by a pump. Administration typically takes 4 to 6 hours. Response to treatment is usually seen within a few days.
Because IG treatment is usually given on an ongoing basis, patient quality of life is a concern. At-home treatments can be administered on the patient’s own schedule and in a setting of maximum comfort.
